Child Advocacy Panel: Discussion of Practice and Careers in the Field
Learn about the various aspects of child advocacy, including child welfare, juvenile justice and education. Speakers will include Professor Richard Balnave, law student Mario Salas with the JustChildren program of the Legal Aid Justice Center, and Andy Block, the director of the Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice. Refreshments will be provided.

HIV/AIDS Law and Policy – a Talk with Dan Bruner
Dan Bruner, director of legal services at Whitman-Walker Health, will speak about HIV/AIDS law and policy. Whitman-Walker Health is a community-based nonprofit health clinic in Washington, D.C., with a mission to help people living with HIV and in the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities. Bruner’s practice has concentrated on discrimination in employment and health care, on insurance and employee benefits, and on privacy issues. Lunch will be provided.

Panel Q&A: Taking Alternate Paths While in Law School
Hear from recent UVA Law grads on how they navigated public interest law and the career market while in law school. Panelists include Kim Rolla, a Powell Fellow working with low income housing resident through the Legal Aid Justice Center; Chris Liseiski, an attorney at the Virginia Capital Representation Resource Center who represents clients facing the death penalty; Mariah Thompson, a Kennedy Fellow working on a human rights-based leadership program for indigenous women in Guatemala; and Robyn Bitner, a Skadden Fellow working for Children of New York and focusing on education rights of homeless children under age 5 in New York City.

Oklahoma attorney Stephen Jones will speak about his legal career, including his experience as lead public defender of Timothy McVeigh in the Oklahoma City Bombing case. Student Loan Exit Counseling
Student loan exit counseling will be conducted for graduating 3Ls. If you have borrowed student loans during law school, attendance at one of these sessions is mandatory. Information covered in student loan exit counseling will include: contacting your lenders; loan repayment options; loan deferment, forbearance and consolidation; debt management strategies and tax benefits; income-based repayment and federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program, and the Virginia Loan Forgiveness Program. It will be an information-packed hour, and financial aid staff will be available for questions following the presentation. If you have borrowed student loans during your time here at UVA Law, attend one of the two sessions being offered (April 6 and April 7).
