Ice Cycle
New York-based dance troupe Time Lapse is coming to Charlottesville to perform "Ice Cycle." This multimedia piece, with choreography by Jody Sperling and music by Matthew Burtner, meditates on the precarity of Arctic icescapes in an era of global climate change. The music and dance are inspired by Sperling's 2014 trip to the Chukchi Sea and Burtner's recordings of Arctic ice cracking. "Ice Cycle" is a crucial example of the growing body of art that translates the abstract fact of climate change into sensory details and narratives that hold people's attention. The event is free and open to the public, but you must reserve your ticket through the UVA Arts Box Office.

Reproductive Ethics Conference
One of the central features of reproductive medicine in our time is the simultaneous increase in the knowledge of and control over human procreation. Every week seems to greet us with new reports of technological advancements ranging from the proximate to the outlandish—and the resulting pace of change threatens to outstrip our capacity for moral deliberation. This symposium will make space for that deliberation by fostering a uniquely interdisciplinary conversation—medical practitioners, sociologists, moral philosophers, lawyers, and theologians all considering controversial moral questions regarding the beginning of life. All too often these subfields become silos replete with particular vocabularies, assumptions, and norms to guide clinical practice. We seek to overcome this fragmentation by engaging with one facet of the same phenomenon. The colloquium is free to attend. Due to limited space, please register your interest with John Nolan, and we will be happy to provide you with further details about accommodation.
